PEA is a natural, body-own substance, and its full name is palmitoylethanolamide.

• Why do you make both medicines and food supplements from the same lipid (nano)technology?

Eyesiu's patented nanotechnology ("lipid nanoparticles") originated in the pharmaceutical industry, and the same lipids are now being used to make existing food supplements work faster, better and longer. The innovative products that can be developed and made from these lipid particles are all aimed at preventing and helping to reduce (over)sensitive inflammatory processes in the brain, eyes, skin and lungs.

Existing food supplements are characterised by the fact that they are already freely available to consumers (without first obtaining a prescription from a doctor), while new medicines first have to undergo a lengthy development process before they can be authorised by the government (registration). For the products based on food supplements, there are no medical claims, there are no doctors who prescribe them, there will therefore be no formal registration process, and there will also be no reimbursement from the health care insurance. 

The price for consumers can therefore be kept low so that the users who benefit from the product can afford it. At the company's laboratories located on the Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP, Netherlands), Pieter J. Gaillard was interviewed about Eyesiu's innovative nanotechnology ("lipid nanoparticles") used in the pharmaceutical industry, which lipid particles the company now also used to make food supplements work faster, better and longer.

• Eyesiu, what is that?
• Where does Eyesiu come from?

The company name Eyesiu reads as "I see you"; meaning "I respect you". 

Dr Pieter J. Gaillard founded Eyesiu Medicines BV in October 2014, and started operationally with a credit ("early phase financing") from the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland and a loan from Rabobank for the set-up of the production laboratory. 

But the story behind the company started over 28 years ago:

• As a student at the time, Pieter was mainly busy with his small company with which they were hired at parties, and their lives mainly consisted of having fun.
• But one day, the morning after working the night before, he found his good friend who had suffered a massive stroke. From his hospital bed, Pieter was offered an internship at a pharmaceutical company to set up methods for researching brain infarcts. Coincidence does not exist.
• Since then, his life has been about inventing and developing products to make our brains healthier, first at the university (Utrecht, Leiden, Amsterdam), and for the past 20 years from Leiden as an entrepreneur.
• Over the years, he has developed new technology and made products that make existing drugs more effective in the brain, and he and his team have put these products into clinical trials for patients with brain tumours and multiple sclerosis.
  
• And because the testing phase for registering these products is lengthy and very expensive, he then licensed them out to larger international companies (1, 2, 3) that have the resources for this, so that they can eventually be prescribed by doctors for their patients.

Over the past 5 years, he has realised that the unique knowledge and skills of developing new drug delivery technologies can also be applied to making food supplements function much better:
